Stay involved
Once your learner has their provisional licence, the real challenge begins. Stay involved and help them through the P-plate learning curve.
The challenge is to help your learner driver navigate the next six months of P-plate driving without crashing and help them build a foundation for lifelong safe driving. Your P-plater may think they have no more learning to do, but nothing could be further from reality.
You might consider negotiating rewards for making safe progress towards six months on P-plates with zero harm, or consequences for not making safe progress.
KEEP HAVING SESSIONS
This is a powerful time for a new driver to learn. They are able to take ideas they get from driving together and apply them when they drive alone. And vice versa – they can bring questions and experiences from driving alone to sessions of driving supervised.
Continue to encourage deep experience – your P-plater will benefit from thinking like a learner driver and begin to notice smaller and smaller mistakes.
