Seniors

As we get older most drivers are aware that reaction time is slowing or they may have eyesight and mobility problems so tend to self regulate their driving to reduce their exposure to danger. You may have noticed that you do one of the following;

  • Avoid making right hand turns at intersections.
  • Tend to make your journeys outside peak hours where possible.
  • Avoid night time driving.
  • Use quieter roads and avoid the freeway

With these points in mind it is important we have a system in place to ensure older drivers are as safe as possible on our road both for their benefit and that of other road users.

In Western Australia once a driver reaches the age of 75 Licensing Services require a periodical eyesight and medical test before renewing your licence. When a driver is 85 or older they are required to undergo both a medical & eyesight test as well as a practical driving assessment - the 'Age Retest'.

In fact why leave having a driving assessment until you are 85. Why not organise your own assessments with a professional instructor every couple of years, this way you are upto date with the road rules and driving skills. This will also help relieve some of the stress and pressure of sitting your age retest at 85.

This section provides up to date information about renewing your licence after age 75 and the Seniors 'Age Retest' as well as other information for the safety of seniors on and around the roads.
